Hawkwind

Co-Pilot – Released 17-03-2025.

Available to listen to, and for download at Hawkwind on Bandcamp
This is my first review of the actual music of a recording here at Sonic Henge.
I’ve not analysed the tonal qualities of the individual instruments, as such, I’ve just listened to the overall flow, and mixtures that came along through this song, which I think is very apt, for me personally, who is just reviewing their relationship with Hawkwind’s music, after an undesirable drift out of that hemisphere.
As such, I was surprised and intrigued and also refreshed by the acoustic intro, and loved how Brock recaptured in music, his busking days, and how he collected his musical friends quite quickly, and transport us gently into the early 80s, where the only interesting beats on our beatboxes were Latino, the rock settings way too robotic and monotonic. This a lovely reflection on the bands origins for me personally. Reminding us all, really, that like a few, Dave had a number of the answers, prior to joining the band, way back in 1969.
As the music progresses beyond the intro, those amazing space vibes come in, the rest of the band flow in, and it quickly gives an amazing Latino space groove that says DANCE!.
There are many reminders of other songs in this extended intro section. Slight hints here and there, and I feel this gently helps us travel into the future from that time, as this song seemed to me, to be a review, a self review of Hawkwind’s journey so far, in some way.
At 3.02, there is a classic, and still amazing, and yet still different, “Swoop”, into the Hawk-Rock, as that familiar bass and drum combination comes in, and we all get to feel that we have come home again: It’s OK, you might be the co-pilot, but the captain has always been in control 🙂
The lyrics come in shortly after, and now I’ve listened a few times, I can hear that Dave is, indeed, singing about such a “Captain”, and this is dreamy, floaty -and at its up-to-date best. At least, for me 🙂
Again, there are reprise reminders of past songs, but not quite enough for me to name them. Good tips are therefore being included here. The band is doing some pointing.
There was, to me, difficulty in hearing some of the lyrics, but that is not always unintended. We need to remember that Hawkwind are a mystical band of the highest order. I’m therefore assuming these lyrics will contain personal messages. Personalised by the highly structured minds of the listeners. Enigmatically, a message I think I got, was “Hide our sides”, and, “By my side”. I’ll need to think about that.
The key message for all that I spotted, was the reminding countdown of those ten seconds of forever: Are YOU ready? Those 10 seconds are ticking.
There are two main blocks of lyrics, then a lovely long outro, that has lovely overtones of the eternally listenable to, Crystal Machine, by Tim Blake, reminding my of the Levitation tour, or was that earlier, 1979?
Dave’s vocals, and every part of the music, for me, are spot on. In fact, I think Dave’s recording voice is improving. Perhaps he’s finding himself improving with age?
The track is from the forthcoming Album, There is no Space for Us, due to be released in April and available on pre-order now, as well as on vinyl!!!
